Arrival is Not About Aliens

Arrival is a 2016 film starring Amy Adams and directed by Denis Villeneuve. It depicts the first contact made with aliens when multiple alien vehicles arrive and remain stationary at different locations scattered through the world, while scientists, military and government personnel from each country interact with the aliens inside those vehicles.

Although the main story revolves around alien contact, the real plot of the film is about human consciousness, our understanding or rather misunderstanding and pointless emphasis on the good and the bad, past and the future. The film, through an intricate storyline, shows the main character, a remarkable yet ordinary women (Amy Adams), experiencing moments in life not bound to time and realizing the value of those moments, whether they lead to things that are labeled as good or bad.

Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus on the film reads “Arrival delivers a must-see experience for fans of thinking person’s sci-fi that anchors its heady themes with genuinely affecting emotion and a terrific performance from Amy Adams.”[1]

It is definitely a great story and I enjoyed it immensely.
